With an estimated 40 million American adults missing all their permanent teeth, there’s never been a better time to restore your smile. That’s because with the introduction of durable, lifelike implant dentures, replacing an entire arch of teeth has never been easier or more effective.
By pairing traditional dentures with permanent, secure dental implants, you can improve their functionality, comfort, and longevity, so you can once again eat, speak, and smile with confidence. At South Ridge Dental, we proudly partner with local surgeons to help our patients restore their beautiful smiles with the help of implant dentures. Much like traditional dentures that can replace an entire arch of teeth in one convenient treatment, implant dentures can also restore your complete smile. But unlike traditional dentures, they are permanently attached to the jaw via a series of permanent dental implants. This means that you don’t need to worry about your prosthetic slipping, losing shape, or becoming accidentally damaged during cleaning. In fact, because they’re attached to the jaw, implant dentures can remain in your mouth 24/7, even while you clean them and when you’re asleep. Plus, because they have a more secure hold than traditional dentures, they restore your full biteforce just like real teeth, allowing you to enjoy eating a variety of fresh and healthy foods without hesitation.
Depending on your unique needs and preferences, your dentist may recommend one of two types of implant dentures at your consultation. These include:
Also known as “hybrid prosthesis,” fixed implant dentures are designed to stay firmly in place in your jaw and can only be removed by a dentist. Typically, they hold in place with a series of four to six strategically placed and positioned dental implants in your jawbone and can permanently support a full denture. Many patients prefer this type of denture because it allows them to forget they even have dentures. However, this type of denture does require the patient to have more jawbone density.
Removable implant dentures can sometimes be referred to as “snap-on dentures.” Although they are still firmly attached to the jaw with dental implants, they use clips (known as bar-retained) or ball sockets (ball-retained) that allow the patient to remove them as necessary. While they do need to be removed daily for cleaning, they typically only require two to five dental implants.

Once you have completed your dental implant consultation with us at South Ridge Dental, we will refer you to one of our trusted local dental implant specialists for the surgical portion of your care. On the day of your surgery, your surgeon will first numb your mouth, and then once comfortable make a series of incisions in your gums. The implants will be surgically attached, and protective caps will be placed over the posts.
Over the next few months, your mouth will heal and your dental implants will permanently fuse with your jawbone via a process called osseointegration. Once this is complete, you will return to have the abutments placed on your implants. These are the portions of the prosthetic that will connect the denture to the dental implants. This portion of treatment requires a small surgical procedure; however, it should be much less involved than the initial surgery, and the healing process should be much faster. While you are healing from this portion of treatment, your implant denture will be underway at the dental lab, and in a few short weeks will be delivered to South Ridge Dental. Once here, we’ll schedule you to come back so your dentist can attach it. If it looks and feels great, you’ll be free to wear it home and can begin using it that very same day!

Most adults who are in good oral and overall health are good candidates for implant dentures- especially those who are tired of dealing with traditional dentures. At your consultation, your dentist will carefully review your specific needs and goals before explaining all your options and recommendations.
To be considered a good candidate for implant dentures, you’ll need to be in good enough health to undergo minor surgery, and your smile will need to be free of oral health issues like cavities and gum disease. You’ll also need to have enough jawbone density for your desired type of implant denture (removable implant dentures require less jawbone density and few implant posts). If necessary, we’ll help you schedule a bone graft or gum disease treatment to help get you ready for your newly restored smile.

Although they do cost more up front than traditional dentures, and take a bit longer to get, implant dentures offer a wide range of incredible benefits, including:
