While dental insurance does offer coverage for restorative care to help with damaged teeth, most plans are actually focused on helping people pay for preventive services so they won’t need dental repairs in the first place. Basically, dental insurance is designed to help patients take care of small problems right away so they don’t turn into bigger (and more expensive ones) later.
How to Get the Most Out of Your Plan
While every dental insurance plan is different, most benefits tend to break down like this:
- Preventive services (checkups, cleanings, X-rays, dental sealants) are covered 80-100%.
- Restorative services (fillings, crowns, dentures, extractions, root canals) are covered 40-80%.
- Cosmetic services (teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, direct bonding) are NOT covered because they are deemed elective.
