Can I Use Dental Bonding to Close a Gap Between My Teeth?

Woman’s smile with a gap between her front teeth

If you have a noticeable gap between your teeth, it might make you feel a bit self-conscious about your appearance. It could also leave your gums exposed to irritants. Certainly, orthodontic treatment is one possible way to get rid of the extra space, but is there a faster solution? Is it possible to use dental bonding to close a gap between teeth? In some cases, yes. Continue reading to learn more about this treatment and what it can accomplish.

What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is commonly known by a few different names, including direct bonding and cosmetic bonding. During treatment, your dentist molds a tooth-colored resin over your teeth. Once it is hardened via a special curing light, the resin can hide a range of imperfections, including discoloration, chips, cracks, and, in some cases, small gaps between the teeth.

The treatment process takes just one appointment and is relatively affordable, making it a popular option among individuals who are eager to enhance their smile with as little inconvenience as possible.

Who Can Use Dental Bonding to Close a Gap Between Their Teeth?

Dental bonding might be able to close the gap between your teeth if:

  • The gap is not too wide. If the gap between your teeth is too big, dental bonding may make your teeth appear unusually large and disproportionate compared to the rest of your smile.
  • There are gaps between certain teeth. Usually, bonding is best for closing gaps between the upper front teeth. However, it can sometimes be used on the lower teeth as well.
  • Your teeth are in good condition. If you have untreated cavities, gum disease, or other oral health issues, your dentist will address them before you move forward with the bonding process.
  • You have realistic expectations. Dental bonding may last for 3 – 5 years or so before it needs to be replaced. If you want a longer-term solution, veneers or orthodontic treatment might be a better choice. (Veneers look similar to bonding, but they are made out of a durable material that may last for 10 – 20 years or longer.)

Do you have a troublesome gap between your teeth? Ask your dentist if dental bonding is the right treatment for you!
