Dealing with Dental Emergencies During Summer Vacation

Each year, 1 in every 5 people experience some sort of dental trauma! Dental emergencies can often happen when you least expect them; and if you encounter one during summer vacation, it can easily derail your fun plans. However, as with any sort of emergency, knowing what to do and being prepared can help to ensure your well-being. Here are some tips from your emergency dentist in Lincoln for what you should do if you find yourself experiencing a dental emergency during summer vacation.

How To Prepare for A Summertime Dental Emergency

Take a page from the Boy Scout’s handbook and be prepared. Even though entirely preventing dental emergencies is ideal, it’s simply not possible—so being prepared for one is the next best thing you can do. Consider the following:

  • Prepare an emergency dental kit – This doesn’t need to be anything expensive, but include items like gauze, over-the-counter pain relievers, dental wax, and a small container for displaced teeth.
  • Research local dentists – Knowing where to go beforehand if you do suffer an emergency can help to ensure that you receive treatment quickly.
  • Schedule a dental visit before leaving – You should be visiting the dentist twice a year anyway, so scheduling an appointment before vacation will allow your dentist to check your mouth for any potential problems.
  • Practice good oral hygiene – You should take good care of your teeth, whether you’re at home or in a hotel. Brushing and flossing daily can reduce the chances of a dental emergency occurring.

Common Summertime Dental Emergencies

There are many kinds of dental emergencies, but some of the common ones that people experience during summertime include:

  • Toothaches and hypersensitivity.
  • Chipped, cracked, or fractured teeth.
  • Displaced teeth.

What To Do When You Suffer a Dental Emergency During Vacation

Even though many emergencies are a result of physical trauma, dental emergencies can occur even without direct contact. That said, regardless of the cause or type of injury, dental emergencies should be addressed promptly! If you have travel insurance, you can contact a local dentist who can see you; it might also be easier to simply visit an emergency room, depending on the nature of your emergency. In any case, contact your primary dentist back home and inform them of the situation; they will want to see you when you’re back.

If you experience a dental emergency during your summer vacation, you might feel like your whole trip is ruined. But this isn’t the case at all; a little preparedness and quick action will ensure that your smile and your vacation aren’t jeopardized.
