5 New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthy Smile

New Year’s resolutions are a great way to set goals for yourself. From deciding you want to travel more to making moves for that new promotion to learning to bake, there are a range of resolutions that can help you fulfill your dreams over the next 365 days. With all the choices available, have you ever considered making New Year’s resolutions for your oral health? Read on for five ideas to achieve a healthier smile in the new year.

#1: Visit the Dentist

Biannual trips to the dentist are key to maintaining good oral health. Next year, prioritize your oral health by scheduling appointments every six months for cleanings and checkups. This will allow your dentist to get rid of any built-up plaque and tartar as well as to do a thorough exam to ensure that your oral health is in good shape.

#2: Brush and Floss Better

Brush your teeth once in the morning and once at night to remove food particles, plaque, and harmful oral bacteria. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid scratching your enamel and fluoride toothpaste to strengthen your teeth. Additionally, floss before bed to lessen your chances of developing cavities between your pearly whites.

#3: Brighten Your Smile

Dark sodas, red wine, and other highly pigmented beverages can leave unsightly stains on your teeth. Cut back on these drinks or consume them through a straw so they have less contact with your pearly whites and aren’t as likely to lead to discoloration. Additionally, ask your dentist about services like veneers, bonding, or whitening to make your smile brighter.

#4: Conquer Dry Mouth

To keep oral health issues like cavities, increased plaque levels, and gum disease from developing, make sure to drink plenty of water. This will keep your mouth well moisturized. If the issue is caused by an underlying condition, your dentist will be able to determine what it is and come up with a treatment plan.

#5: Cut Out Tobacco

Gum disease and oral cancer are two serious health concerns that can be caused by smoking. Make a point of cutting cigarettes and other tobacco products out of your life in the new year. If you need help quitting, look for online resources, reach out to your friends and family for support, or ask your doctor or dentist for tips.

If you don’t have resolutions already, consider making at least one for better oral health. By this time next year, you may be sporting the smile you’ve always wanted!
